The Working Committee on Psychological Crisis Intervention was established in 2008 in response to the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake. Following the earthquake, CPS initiated a 20-year action program for psychological assistance to Wenchuan Earthquake and simultaneously formed the Psychological Crisis Intervention Committee to facilitate the implementation of psychological assistance efforts. Dr. Zhang Kan, chairman of CPS, served as the inaugural director of the committee, followed by Dr. Zhang Jianxin of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The current director is Mr. Liu Zhenkui, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Psychological Society and principal investigator at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Vice-chairmen include Fan Fuming, Wang Wenzhong, and Zhan Qisheng.
Since its establishment, the committee conducts psychological crisis intervention and provides psychological assistance in the aftermath of major natural and man-made disasters. It aims to establish a long-term mechanism for the psychological crisis intervention system and psychological assistance in hospitals, schools, and communities. The committee actively fosters international and domestic academic exchanges and seminars in the field of trauma and psychological crisis intervention and organizes systematic training and supervision for professionals in psychological crisis intervention. It also contributes to the development of human resources for psychological crisis intervention and assistance. The committee actively constructs China’s social psychological service system, fostering a healthier China through its efforts in crisis intervention and psychological assistance.
