Clinical Psychology Registration of the Chinese Psychological Society

In order to promote and facilitate the legitimate, organized, and healthy development of clinical and counseling psychology in China, it is crucial to establish a relatively comprehensive academic registration system for professionals and institutions in the field of clinical and counseling psychology that is tailored to the Chinese context. This system will assist the country in implementing an academic and technical registration system for industry management. The initiative was launched in 2004 under the direction of the Chinese Psychological Society (CPS), leading to the establishment of three preparatory working groups by December 2005: the Standard Setting Working Group, Ethics Working Group, and Registration Working Group.

After thorough discussions in 2006, two foundational documents were formulated and unanimously approved by the Standing Council of the CPS on February 5, 2007. These documents are the Standards for Registration of Professional Institutions of Clinical and Counseling Psychology of the Chinese Psychological Society (first edition, referred to as Registration Standards) and the Code of Ethics for Clinical and Counseling Psychology of the Chinese Psychological Society (first edition, referred to as the Code of Ethics). The Clinical and Counseling Psychology Registration System of the Chinese Psychological Society (referred to as the Registration System) officially registered the first batch of 109 registered supervisors.

On July 29, 2014, the Standing Council of the CPS approved the official establishment of the Clinical Psychology Registration Working Committee. In February 2018, the newly revised Registration Standards, Second Edition, and Code of Ethics, Second Edition were adopted by the Standing Council of the CPS adopted and they have been implemented since July 1, 2018.

The primary responsibilities of the Clinical Psychology Registration Working Committee include:
1. Organizing the development of the draft registration standards and ethical provisions of the registration system.
2. Implementing the registration provisions and examining the qualifications of the relevant applicant organizations and personnel.
3. Implementing and interpreting ethical provisions, auditing and monitoring the professional ethics of professionals and organizations, providing ethical trainings and handling complaints related to ethical matters.
4. Establishing counseling supervision programme sites in different regions to provide supervision and ethical training for local professionals.
5. Organizing biannual committee work meetings and academic conferences every two years; to date, five conferences held.
